I can either take my truck to a shop that has a decent reputation for doing quality gear work to fix the setup on a noisy front diff.
Price: $250-400 (probably more like $500 real monies)
Out of truck for a couple of days max
Reputation for quality work: a couple of great recommendations, and a couple of mediocre reviews
OR
I take out the 3rd member, have it shipped to a guy that is known to be amazing and shipped back
Price: $250 for his work +shipping x 2 + axle reassembly here locally (all in more than $650 easy)
Out of truck a week or more
Reputation for quality work: unmatched
Thoughts?
I have an appointment for next Wed at the local place. Six State Distributors.

Honestly, if the guy does amazing work and you can be without a truck that long, it will be worth it.
Unless the truck doesnt mean anything to you

Unless the truck doesnt mean anything to you
...Nice. Nice. However I don't think it means significantly more money and downtime. The truth is that I'm not pulling the third or putting it back in, and I haven't even looked up what It costs to ship something like that. probably a lot.

Question, is guy with unmatched work able to ship you a complete 3rd member and then give you a core charge for yours that you ship to him? Might save some time and you'll know the job is done right.

Door number 2. Chances are that approximately $150 difference will be worth it, and may be cheaper in the long run. It's already been done wrong once (more?), so I'd say it makes sense to do it as right as you can and put this problem behind you. Especially considering that you actually use the truck properly, and wheel with your family in it.

Ive shipped transmissions and motors before, honestly less than you would think, but its all freight and ground shipping only. Ive had best experiences with UPS.

not likely, Toyota high pinion e lockers are in high demand and I suspect there are to many spares floating around

bugger, I'd still go for the guy who knows his shit. This isn't something you would want to do twice.

I'd probably go with option one.

I guess you don't have an open spare 3rd member.
I think I'd like to get a 9" that's not all burnt up for swapping if my ARB ever needs repair.
I'd ship it if you have time, cash, another ride while it's down.
If not then local guys.
